Crohn's disease

Treatment with the thermal waters of Plombieres-les-bains

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects more than 250,000 people in France, 25% of whom are under 18 years of age and 23 new cases are reported per day.

IBD (including Crohn’s Disease and Recto-Colic Haemorrhagic) are among the priorities of public health in gastroenterology because of their increasing prevalence, their chronicity, their strong impact on the quality of life of patients as well as their direct and indirect cost.

As can be seen in the book “Plombières Ancien et Moderne” by Haumonte (1905), the Romans already sent the soldiers to Plombieres to “strengthen the nerves and repair broken bones”. Since 1857, the thermal springs of Plombières-les-Bains benefit from a declaration of public interest and since 1929, from a perimeter of protection. From 1935 at the Congrés des Colites de Plombières then in 1960 and in 1970 according to the respective theses of the professors Pierre Baille and Jean-François Gury, the station of Plombieres is recognized for its efficiency in the assignments of the Digestive Apparatus.

Long used by the military previously established in the colonies (amoeba treatment), Plombieres-les-Bains is today and for more than 15 years, one of the rare spas in France specialized in the accompaniment and in the care of patients with IBD.

The care provided at Plombieres for the treatment of IBD has a stimulating and regulating effect on intestinal transit with a decrease in the spasmogenic component, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

The heavy drug treatments related to these pathologies can therefore be reduced. The entire medical staff at Plombieres confirms this: “We do not pretend to cure these diseases but we effectively relieve the functional signs”.

In addition to spa treatments, the Plombieres team offers accompaniment by a dietitian to improve, during and after the treatment, the quality of life of the patient. Sophrology sessions are also available on request upon arrival at the cure.

Decrease in drug intake, a real challenge

A study by ANSM (National Agency for Drug Safety) was conducted in collaboration with AP-HP on a large cohort of 189,289 patients with IBD and with a follow-up of 6.7 years (median).

Published in November 2017, this one shows that anti-TNFα as well as Thiopurines, are associated with a risk of lymphoma multiplied by 2 to 3 and up to 6 when combined. Although the risk of having a lymphoma is small at the individual level, it reveals the extent to which the decrease in drug intake is a real issue for patients with IBD.

Every year, the resort receives many positive testimonials from patients and thanks for the benefits brought by the spa treatment.
